A cheap VPN really can cost about $2 a month — but only for the first two years, paid up front, and only until it renews at a very different price. This is a pricing desk, not a coupon dump: we show you the intro rate, what it renews at, and the true cost over three years, so a budget VPN deal is a decision you make with the full number in front of you.

Every price on this site is a dated snapshot — read in September 2026 — of the pricing *structure*, not a live quote. VPN prices change constantly and depend on your region, the plan tier and whatever promo is running, so we always tell you to check the current price before you buy, and we never run a fake countdown.

Start with the real cost

The single most useful thing to know about VPN deals is that the discount is the standing price. That "83% off" banner is not a sale that ends tonight; it is roughly what the two-year plan always costs. What actually varies between providers is the renewal — and that is where a cheap VPN quietly becomes an expensive one. See what cheap VPNs really cost over time for the full breakdown, or read how VPN pricing works and where the renewal trap hides.

If you are trying to test a VPN without paying, start with free trials and money-back guarantees — most "free trials" are not what they sound like.

Common questions

How much does a cheap VPN actually cost?
A budget VPN's headline rate is roughly $2 to $3.50 a month, but only if you pay up front for two years. As of September 2026 that puts the real first-term cost around $52 to $84 billed once. The catch is renewal: that low rate applies to the first term only, then the price climbs — sometimes doubling or tripling.
Why are all VPN deals "83% off"?
Because the discount is the standing price, not a limited sale. The crossed-out monthly figure exists mainly to make the long-term plan look like a bargain. The number that matters is what you pay per month across the whole commitment, and what it renews at afterward — not the size of the percentage.
What's the cheapest VPN over the long run?
Once you count renewals, Private Internet Access is usually the cheapest of the well-known providers because it renews at about $57 a year — one of the mildest jumps. CyberGhost and Surfshark are close on the intro price but renew higher. The intro-rate ranking and the three-year ranking are not the same list.
Is a VPN free trial the same as a money-back guarantee?
No. Most "VPN free trials" are mobile app-store trials that automatically bill you after seven days unless you cancel. A money-back guarantee means you pay first, then request a refund within the window — 30 days at most providers, 45 at CyberGhost. The guarantee is the more reliable way to test risk-free.
Should I buy a lifetime VPN?
Almost never. A VPN has ongoing costs — servers, audits, protocol updates — that one payment cannot fund forever. In 2025 VPNSecure deactivated its lifetime accounts after a sale and BulletVPN shut down entirely. A cheap two-year plan from an established provider is the safer budget move.
